Sneaky calories, creeping overweight: Part 1

If you are trying to lose weight you might get impatient because results are slow. Take a moment to think about it – how long does it take to become overweight? It doesn’t happen overnight. Whatever weight is gained has slowly accumulated over time, therefore it’s understandable that it won’t disappear overnight.

Did you know that having a minor calorie surplus every day for a year will result in substantial weight gain? If you consume just 100 calories more than you need per day for a year it will amount to 36 500 kcal, roughly equivalent to gaining about 10 lbs (≈ 4.5 kg) of fat. Just to give you a picture of what 100 calories look like - it’s equivalent to the number of calories in one medium apple, a medium banana, or a small cup of yogurt. It doesn’t matter where the calories come from, even calories from healthy foods will be stored as fat if they are in excess. Keep in mind this is a simplified explanation. In real life it's not fruit and veggies, but rather highly processed foods, that make us fat.

Research suggests that low resting metabolic rate (RMR) is associated with low skeletal muscle mass. So in order to increase your RMR – build muscle.  Muscle does more for you than making you look good.
